#SeriousAboutWildlifeCrime – Join the ETIAtalk on March 9, 2017

The second ETIAtalks panel discussion under the overarching topic of “Environmental Crime: the challenge of the 21st century” will look at one of the fastest growing topics in this field, wildlife crime. At first glance, this topic might seem to be a problem limited to certain countries or regions, but we will convince you that it is truly a topic of global proportions. With the UNODC publishing a first comprehensive report on wildlife crime just last year, the true dimensions of worldwide demand for rhino horns or elephant ivory as well as the increasing biodiversity loss have for the first time become very clear. For this reason, we cordially invite you to join us on Thursday, 9th of March 2017, at 7.00 pm, at the Festsaal of the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, Favoritenstraße 15a, 1040 Vienna.

Just one week after the fourth official World Wildlife Day, on March 3rd, the goal of this talk is to underline the importance of combating wildlife crime on all levels. With poaching still being a very lucrative and ever-growing business, largely ruled by corruption, we want to put the focus on legal and technical countermeasures. Especially considering that wildlife officials are warning that we are losing millions of animals per year due to illegal poaching, which might end in the extinction of numerous wildlife species. However, we will also try to look at the considerable financial implications of illegal wildlife trade. With estimates ranging from 10 to 200 billion US Dollars per year, it comes as no surprise that also wildlife crime is now ranked among drug, arms and human trafficking as one of the most profitable organized crimes.

The second ETIATalks of 2016/17 wants to highlight these issues and present ways to combat poaching with both local measures and international cooperation.
