200th anniversaries: The ball of the Technical University and the Viennese Waltz

During the years of the Viennese Congress (1814-1815), not only the Polytechnic Institute was founded but also Viennese Waltz achieved its first golden age. Since then, the so-called „Techniker Kränzchen“ has been held regularly, today better known as the ball of the Technical University (TU). On 29 January 2015, students, professors and guests of honour gathered in the Hofburg to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this dance event. Even though the TU ball is one of Vienna’s most historic balls, the music programme includes more than Viennese Waltz. Dance enthusiasts take to the floor to standard and Latin dance music, jazz, swing, or polka. Less gifted dancers can enjoy various dance performances, the choir of the TU and the famous midnight Quadrille. Or they simply have a glass of Viennese wine in the Heurigen room and practice their gambling skills in the roulette room. The TU ball 2015 was very well attended and at 4 a.m. the majority of the ball guests could still be found on the dancefloor. Also students of ETIA6, ETIA7 and ETIA8 enjoyed the ball till dawn and some of them even headed to the traditional breakfast in Café Schrödinger.
