Today in conversation with: Maria Wirth, MSc, Project Development, Alchemia-Nova GmbH, Alumna Class 2014-2016

Why did you choose the ETIA master course at TU Wien?

During my previous studies I had focused on international environmental policy, but I felt that the relevant technical understanding would be necessary to assess the different strategies and angles to protect our natural environment when making decisions. The ETIA program sheds light specifically on the trade-offs among different aspects of environment, which require an interdisciplinary perspective to form the most effective solutions.

What advice would you want to give to new prospective ETIA master course students – what should they know?

Within the broad program, the master thesis grants the opportunity to specialize on a subject, which can pave the way to your future career. Think of how your master thesis can have impact. There are many organizations and companies out there that are lacking specific insights you could provide. Working with them can help you write a great thesis that matters.

How did you benefit from the program personally? (networking, management of relationships)?

The two years were extremely intense and I definitely grew personally. Besides the program, I was also shaped by the inspiring people around me. The program also allowed me to step into UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organisation), where I did an internship during the first year and where I got my first job after graduation.

What come to your mind when you think about the program? What were the highlights?

It was intense and exciting. We had exams almost weekly, with communal last-minute panic on Sunday evenings, thesis research on the side, work on the side, and of course lots of parties. Looking back, ETIA certainly taught me to work extremely efficiently, which has proven a valuable take away for my professional life since.

In 10 years I will be…

…replacing grey with green infrastructures all over the world.
